The Universe Works

From my dear cousin:
On my morning walk today, [my dog] Maxwell stopped outside a house and was staring at some squirrels in the tree in the front yard. After a minute or so an older woman came out and we started chatting. She told me how much she loves dogs and how she recently lost her dog, and how she is sick and spent the last 4 months in the hospital. She expressed how much she loved Maxwell and chatting, so I told her I would stop on Wednesday with Max, and we can sit outside, watch Max watch squirrels and chat some more. She gave me a huge hug and started to cry and told me she would be watching for us. The Universe works in mysterious ways and I am really looking forward to Wednesday morning ♥

I found this photograph on the internet. It's by Sarah Rhoads at SarahRhoads.com
I found it via this lovely blog post:

"A hug protects and supports.

A hug allows two to become one in joyous, overwhelming love.

A hug is a full expression of happiness."

Why does it work?

I heard a snippet of an interview with a man from Iraq the other day on the radio. He spoke about his traumatic experience in war torn Iraq, and the conflict between Sunni and Shiite groups. When questioned about the mixture of races and beliefs he now encounters daily in New York City, he commented that so many different people living together feels like an impending eruption. He wondered aloud, how could it be sustainable? How could it not at some point devolve into violence? Of course he was afraid, having lived in a multicultural city before, and seeing it collapse into unthinkable chaos.

He talked about all the different kinds of people on the subway. In my head, I can picture it clearly. So many people from incredibly different backgrounds, all holding hatred and judgement in their hearts. All carrying traumas of their own. We all carry these things. In one way or another.

But, we love each other.
At least I do.
I love you.
I see you, and you are me.
I see you as a child.
And I try to open my heart to your experience.
Sometimes I don't understand.
But it just takes time.
And I always will try, and I always will care for you.

All those people on the subway today. I think they love each other too. Have you not experienced the kindness of strangers? It is as much a thing of natural beauty as any sunset, or mountain, and just as common. Maybe more.
(Which reminds me, I still have to pay forward the favor of that man at the diner who paid our tab for no reason.)

I'm not saying it could never happen here because we are different or special. We are not. We are all the same. As long as we keep recognizing that, we'll be ok.

What do you think?

Story From A Friend

"Today as I was running to catch my bus to an interview, I unknowingly dropped my wallet. When I got on the bus the driver saw my panic & gave me a pass (she just responded "help someone out in return, it's really no problem!). After my interview I got a call from a woman who found my wallet, and returned it with everything still in it (even had some cash she didn't even take!). When I tried to offer her money she said she wouldn't take it, so I said I would donate it in her name. She said she worked at a domestic violence shelter & I should donate it to there. So, I'm putting out the link. If you have a little to spare, you should donate to Raphael House. I often forget there are some kind-hearted people still left in the world."

This story comes from a dear friend and incredible artist, Emily Skaer. Check out her artwork here:

Josh Williams, Mordecai, and the Bird that wants in.

Check out this crazy bird that apparently enjoys stealing peoples' thunder at 1:30. Thanks to Katie Trent (an amazing artist who is making my wedding invites) for alerting me to this awesome animal:
